Young people across North West Queensland are being encouraged to get creative, with entries now open for the North West Hospital and Health Service (North West HHS) Child and Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS) Art Competition 2026.

The competition invites students from Years 4 to 12 to create an original artwork inspired by this year’s theme: “Inside my world – thoughts, feelings, culture and country.”

Designed to celebrate creativity while promoting mental health awareness, the competition provides young people with a platform to express themselves and start important conversations about wellbeing.

North West HHS Director Mental Health, Alcohol, and Other Drugs team, Dan Van Der Donk, said the competition was an opportunity to connect with young people in a meaningful and engaging way.

“This competition is about giving young people a voice and encouraging them to share their experiences through art,” Dan said.

“We see some pretty incredible talent across the North West each year, and 2026 will be no exception. The CYMHS team is creating space for young people to express themselves and know they’re being heard.”

Students can enter by submitting an original artwork that:

  • Reflects the 2026 theme: “Inside my world – thoughts, feelings, culture and country.”
  • Is A3 or A4 in size
  • Is accompanied by a completed entry form

Entries can be submitted:

  • In person: Mental Health, 30 Camooweal Street, Mount Isa
  • Email: NWHHS.CYMHSartcompetition@health.qld.gov.au

The competition is open from 30 March 2026 to 26 June 2026.

The competition is open to students in three categories:

  • Years 4–6
  • Years 7–9
  • Years 10–12

Winners in each category will receive a $500 Sportspower voucher and art set, with selected artworks featured on CYMHS promotional materials.

The CYMHS Art Competition aims to raise awareness about youth mental health, encourage help-seeking, and create a more open and supportive environment for young people across the North West.

By bringing together creativity, culture and community, the competition helps start conversations that matter—and reminds young people they’re not alone.
