The Normanton community came together yesterday, 29 October 2025, to celebrate the official opening of the new Normanton Hospital; a modern, purpose-built facility designed to meet the growing health needs of the Gulf region.

The new hospital represents a major investment in rural health, delivering state-of-the-art clinical spaces, expanded services, and a culturally welcoming environment that reflects the spirit and identity of the local community.

Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM, Governor of Queensland, officially opened the hospital at an event attended by local community members, Elders, staff, and leaders from the North West Hospital and Health Service (NWHHS).

North West Hospital and Health Service Acting Chief Executive, Andrew Quabba, said the new hospital marks a major step forward for healthcare access in the Gulf, providing modern facilities that support both patients and staff.

“This new hospital means so much to the people who live and work here. It gives our teams the space and tools to do their best work and makes it easier for locals to get care without travelling hundreds of kilometres. It’s been a real community effort from start to finish, and something everyone should be proud of,” said Mr Quabba.

Construction of the new hospital was delivered by Hutchinson Builders and guided by extensive community consultation, in partnership with local government, Traditional Owners and health consumers, to ensure the facility reflects the needs and values of the region.

The new hospital includes a fully equipped emergency department, 18 inpatient beds, private consultation rooms, a dental surgery, pharmacy and x-ray services, and an ambulance bay. It also features shaded verandas designed for the Gulf climate, with a renal dialysis unit planned to open in 2026 to provide life-saving treatment closer to home.

The opening also included the sealing of a community time capsule, featuring contributions from staff, students, and residents — capturing a snapshot of life in the Gulf in 2025 to be opened in 50 years’ time.

The North West Hospital and Health Service thanks everyone who contributed to this milestone and looks forward to continuing to provide world-class care, close to home, for generations to come.
