North West Hospital and Health Service Leadership Update

North West Hospital and Health Service (HHS) advises that Chief Executive Mr Sean Birgan has accepted a permanent appointment as Health Service Chief Executive at Mackay Hospital and Health Service, following his recent secondment in the role.

Mr Birgan will conclude his tenure at North West HHS prior to commencing his new appointment on 2nd February 2026.

Cheryl Vardon AO, Board Chair, thanked Mr Birgan for his leadership and contribution to the North West.

“Sean has provided steady and considered leadership for our service, supporting the Board and organisation through a significant period of renewal following administration. His focus on strengthening governance, clinical safety and organisational culture has positioned North West HHS well for the future. We thank him for his commitment and wish him every success in Mackay,” Ms Vardon said.

Mr Andrew Quabba will continue acting as the Health Service Chief Executive, North West HHS, while recruitment for the permanent role is undertaken.

Mr Quabba said the organisation remains focused on continuity and care.

“Our services continue to operate as normal, and our priorities remain unchanged. I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to date and look forward to continuing to support our teams and communities while the recruitment process is progressed,” Mr Quabba said.

Recruitment for the permanent Chief Executive position at North West HHS will commence shortly.

There is no impact to patient services as a result of these arrangements.
