We’ve been wrangling paper charts longer than a rodeo bull… but as of today, Mount Isa ICU has gone digital!

Mount Isa Base Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has flipped the switch on a digital transformation that will change the way critical care is delivered in the North West.

From 30 September, the ICU will officially “go live” with Metavision, a world-class clinical information system that replaces paper charts with real-time electronic records.

The new system doesn’t just tidy up paperwork. It connects Mount Isa ICU with the Townsville University Hospital ICU, creating a digital bridge between regional and tertiary critical care. That means faster decisions, safer care, and better outcomes for the sickest patients in our region.

“This is a game-changer for how we deliver intensive care,” said Andrew Quabba, Chief Operating Officer of North West Hospital and Health Service.

“Having instant access to up-to-the-second patient information makes our work faster, safer and smarter. It’s not just technology, it’s lifesaving.”

Sean Birgan, Chief Executive of North West Hospital and Health Service, said this brings Mount Isa ICU in line with other facilities across Queensland, ensuring our patients benefit from the same digital systems and seamless care.

“This is one of the biggest shifts in ICU care for our region in decades. We’re moving from clipboards to cutting-edge tech, and that means our patients are getting the very best care, backed by the very best information.”

Metavision is part of Queensland Health’s broader digital health strategy, moving towards a future where every hospital is connected, and every patient’s story is only a click away.
